Hiring Professional Movers? Check Out These Potentially Restricted Items You May Have To Move On Your Own

Posted on

If you want to get your items from point A to point B safely and efficiently during a residential move, there is no doubt that professional moving services are the key. These professionals can help you with everything from packing your belongings and providing boxes to arranging and setting up your furniture at the new place. With the wealth of services these moving companies have to offer, customers sometimes forget that just like every business, there are sometimes guidelines to be followed.

In the moving business, guidelines usually revolve around items that the company cannot move for liability or safety reasons. Here are a few items your chosen professional moving company may not be able to load onto the moving truck and haul on your behalf.

Fertilizer, Pesticides, and Other Household Chemicals

You never truly realize how many hazardous chemicals you have hanging around in your home and garage until something forces you to pay attention. When you get down to it, the average household truly does have a lot of chemicals hanging around, whether it is cleaning and garden supplies, paint, or other items. These chemicals are considered hazardous, toxic, and sometimes flammable, which means they can react with other chemicals, to heat, and even brisk movement. Therefore, most moving companies will not take a chance on hauling them.

Perishable Household Items

Household perishables can also be a restricted item on a moving truck. Refrigerated food or foods that are not dry grocery may be against the rules. There is a greater risk of contamination occurring on a moving truck when there are organic items on board. Plus, perishable items can create huge hassles and concerns where temperature changes, pests, and other issues are concerned. It is a better idea to use up what perishable food you have before your move and get rid of whatever is left over because it probably won't be allowed on the moving truck

Out-of-the-Ordinary Items or Belongings of Excessive Value

Pretty much all moving companies carry insurance on the contents of the truck that protects your belongings during their services. However, this coverage amount only goes so far. Because the company will not want to haul something they cannot insure, some items may be turned away. For example, if you have an impressive painting worth $100,000, it may not be something the moving company can reasonably insure against damages during the move, so you may have to make other moving arrangements.
