3 Mistakes That Could Slow Your Long Distance Move

Posted on

Even with careful planning and preparation, moving day can sometimes be challenging. If you are moving long distance, the risk of experiencing a disaster is increased. If you are moving long distance, it is important to avoid some of the mistakes that other movers have made if you want to keep your move on track.

Packing Up Everything

While packing up your belongings, it might be tempting to pack up everything you own. Unfortunately, this could add to your moving charges. If you are using a moving company, chances are, the movers are charging according to weight. The more deadweight you pack up, the higher your moving bill will be.

To avoid busting your moving budget, take the time to reassess your belongings. Now is the time to toss possessions you no longer need. You can even donate them to local charitable organizations or friends and family. If you are looking for some ways to generate funds before leaving, you can even hold a garage sale to get rid of some of your possessions.

Failing to Check Insurance

Even if everyone involved with the move is careful, there is still the possibility that something can be broken. If that happens, you do not want to spend the first few days in your new place wondering who will pay for it. If you have taken the time to review your insurance, you will know what steps to take to replace your broken item.

If you are hiring a mover, review the company's insurance. You want to know under which conditions your items will be paid for and what steps you have to take to file a claim. If there is additional coverage available, carefully review it before determining whether or not you want it.

Waiting to Disassemble Furniture

One of the biggest mistakes you can make with your long distance move is waiting until the last minute to disassemble furniture. If you wait until the last minute, you will rush. When you rush, you have a higher chance of losing parts.

By starting well ahead of time, you will have time to properly label and sort all of your furniture so that the items can be easily reassembled when you get to your destination. You also can be sure that they are ready to go when the movers show up so that you do not face additional charges for the movers' time.
